Where Do You File an INTERPOL Deletion Request?

For many people, the first sign that their name sits in INTERPOL’s files is not a letter, but a moment of disruption they can’t explain. And in that moment, one question dominates everything else: what do I do, and where do I have to go to fix it?

Where Can I Submit a Red Notice Deletion Request?

There is a persistent assumption that challenging INTERPOL means flying to its headquarters in Lyon, standing before officials, and arguing your case in person. This is not how the process works. The Commission for the Control of INTERPOL’s Files (the independent body that reviews challenges to data held in INTERPOL’s information system) operates entirely on written submissions. Cases are decided on the strength of the documents, not on the applicant’s presence.

You may apply yourself or through an authorised legal representative, and the request can be prepared and submitted from wherever you are. The CCF Secretariat is based in Lyon, but attendance there is not part of the procedure.

That said, “remote” does not mean “simple.” A CCF application is a legal exercise demanding precision, evidence, and strategy – and for a person facing a Red Notice or Diffusion, the stakes of getting it wrong are real.

What Does the CCF Assess in a Deletion Request?

The central question is not where the request was filed. It is whether the data complies with INTERPOL’s rules. The CCF assesses deletion applications by examining the underlying facts, the relevant criminal proceedings and the data-processing concerns raised in the submission.

Before requesting deletion, it is often necessary to determine what information INTERPOL holds. This can be particularly important because Red Notices, Diffusions and other forms of INTERPOL data are not always publicly visible. An individual may have no clear explanation for repeated secondary screening at borders, a refused visa, a restricted bank account or an unexpected warning from a business partner.

A confidential request for access to personal data may clarify whether INTERPOL processes information relating to the individual. Where immediate risks are apparent, a deletion application or a pre-emptive request may need to be considered without delay. The correct route depends on the evidence available and on whether a record is confirmed, anticipated or already causing harm.

Deletion Request Doesn’t Suspend the Red Notice

Filing a deletion request does not automatically suspend a Red Notice, Diffusion or other record. The consequences during the CCF process can remain significant, particularly for travel. Before crossing a border, renewing a passport, accepting an overseas meeting or making a visa application, it is sensible to obtain advice tailored to the countries involved and the nature of the alert.

Frequently Asked Questions About INTERPOL CCF Deletion Requests

Can I file an INTERPOL CCF deletion request without a lawyer?

Yes. You can submit a CCF deletion request yourself or through an authorised legal representative. Because the CCF examines cases primarily through written submissions and supporting documents, clear legal arguments and properly organised evidence can be important in complex cases.

How long does an INTERPOL CCF deletion request take?

The CCF is generally required to decide a request for correction or deletion within nine months from the date the request becomes admissible. Additional time may be required for comments by the INTERPOL General Secretariat and notification of the final decision.

Is an INTERPOL Red Notice an international arrest warrant?

No. An INTERPOL Red Notice is not an international arrest warrant. It is a request to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender or similar legal action. Each INTERPOL member country determines the legal effect of a Red Notice under its own national law.

Are INTERPOL CCF deletion requests confidential?

Yes. CCF proceedings, files and communications are confidential. The CCF may publish selected anonymised decisions for informational purposes, but individual applications and decisions are not generally made public.

Where do I file an INTERPOL CCF deletion request?

CCF requests are generally submitted through INTERPOL's dedicated online CCF Portal. Applicants do not normally need to attend INTERPOL Headquarters in Lyon to submit a deletion request.

Can the CCF delete an INTERPOL Red Notice?

The CCF can examine whether data recorded in INTERPOL's Information System comply with INTERPOL's rules. Where data are found to be non-compliant, the CCF may order their correction or deletion, which can result in the removal of data underlying a Red Notice or Diffusion.
